Technology in general is a funny thing. The easiest way to describe my relationship with it is the old cliche of love/hate. Being able to access almost any photographers work & discover new work on a daily basis, is beyond amazing, & part of the reason this site even exists. The movement of information is a wonderful thing but it also takes some of the magic & romanticism out of it. Where as before I had to go to the library & page thru photo books, you can now view most of the work somewhere out there on the information superhighway.
I know very little about Adam Malantonio, but he kind of makes me a liar by featuring him in this post & part of me thinks he would enjoy that fact. I was on tour with We Were Skeletons & we spent July 4th at a cook out in Bethlehem, PA. Malantonio was in one of the bands that played & later that day we played beer bottle baseball together, so i technically knew him before the internet, but what I didn’t know was that he was also a photographer & a good one at that. A self described college dropout/ fake librarian, Malantonio’s newest work carries the banner “The Joy of Discovery” & in no fewer words could I describe why I love his work.
I am not sure how I first came across David Bram, but somewhere along the line we became Facebook “friends” & soon after I found his Fraction Magazine, a continuous source of new photography. Thru all of this I had no idea he was also a photographer & still am unsure of how I learned this fact, but the good news is, is that I did learn it, because his work hits that sweet spot of iconic, ironic, odd, & just plain beautiful mixing in a way that I so love. His series Vehicular, is almost entirely of cars, how could I not love his work.
Tumblr much like I generalized earlier with technology, has its pros & cons. The continuous source of photo flowing into ones dashboard is like christmas everyday, for the viewer, & a continuos nightmare of lost identity for the photographer. Last night as I was endlessly scrolling thru, I skipped over & then went back to a photo by Matt Nighswander. The photo is of a perfect evening sky being interupted by a low flying airplane, almost visually kissing the roof of a convenience store & a man exiting his car. I stared for a few moments before clicking thru. Again I have no idea how I found Nighswander & his work, but somewhere along the line I started following his tumblr & I would advise you do the same.
